LABOUR SHORTAGE IN CANADA
Overall, the aging of the Canadian workforce coupled with Canada’s low birth rate has the potential to create shortages in both trades and highly skilled occupations within Canada. As a result, there is a large likelihood that Canada will need to continue to turn to immigrant workers as a sources of labour.
CANADIAN GLOBAL LABOUR SUPPLY STUDY – SOLUTIONS FOR CANADA
The Calgary Economic Development Agency published a report based on their global labour study. (Calgary Economic Development, Full Report, September 11, 2008)
In the report, Mexico was listed as being a top labour source provider for the following professions: Gas fitters, Plumbers, Steamfitters, Bricklayers, Concrete Finishers, Plasterers, Drywall Installers, Tilesetters, Maintenance Technicians, Electrical Power Line, Cable Workers, Electricians including Powersystem and Industrial, Telecommunications Installation and Repair Workers, Blacksmiths, Boilermakers, Ironworkers, Sheet Metal Workers, Structural Metal and Platework Fabricators and Fitters, Welders, Related Machine Operators, and Mechanics of every kind.
The report continuously stated that Mexico was a top choice for Canadian companies to attain immigrant workers because “the relative proximity of Mexico to Canada offers advantages for recruiting workers and Mexico’s pool of unskilled labour makes it an excellent target for a dual approach of recruiting trained and ready to train workers.” In addition the report mentioned that “the proximity of labour supply in Mexico makes the country and important target for labour attraction.”
